Dyed by Hand Silk Stocking
Introduced to textiles at an early age, Julie of Hand Dyed Yarns has been expanding her knowledge and skills ever since. In 2012 she decided to start dyeing yarn-the rest is history.
As a former medical scientist, Julie played with dyes daily and has honed her skills of observation, theory and practise in dyeing processes. Dissatisfied with the yarns available at the time, the decision to dye yarn was a natural progression for her. Family and friends encouraged her to present her yarn for sale and Dyed By Hand Yarns was born.
Since moving to a rural property in East Gippsland Julie has been influenced by nature and the unique effect of the Australian sun on colours. Using professional dyes and various dyeing techniques she creates small batches of hand dyed yarn for your crafting adventures.
"Most of my colour inspiration comes from the world around us: from observation as well as photos and online resources. Other ideas come from songs, movies, literature, the changing seasons and especially Australiana. I am constantly fascinated by the way that the Australian sunlight influences how we see color here - clear, bright, bold and mysterious."
For our March pop-up shop, we chose Silk Stocking, 50% superwash merino/50% silk 100g/400m/438yd, and Julie suggested a collaboration with Ambah O'Brien, a fellow Aussie!
The Oyster Shawl by Ambah O'Brien is a lacey shawl that is as practical as it is glamorous.
Drape it over your shoulders as the perfect compliment to your evening wear, or wear it casually wrapped around your neck for day-to-day warmth. Love the dark vibe of this piece!!
Choose one skein each two contrasting colors of Silk Stocking - Julie curated several pairings just for us:
- "Apricot Nectar" & "Round Midnight" (as shown in model)
- "Blackened Rose" and "Silver Screen"
- "Freckled Sun Orchid" and "The Other Woman"
The Oyster Shawl is knit from the top down, forming an elongated crescent shape. Written instructions are provided for the eyelet body section, then choose from charted or written instructions for the circle lace edging.
Find Ambah O'Brien's Oyster Shawl on Ravelry. Ambah has generously set up a 30% discount for the Oyster Shawl on both her Ravelry and Etsy stores - no code needed, through March 31.
This "Workday Scarf" by Sue Flanders is a great (free) one-skein project to show off these colors and stitches! A little garter, a little lace, and a lovely piece to wear year-round and show off your fiber love!
One skein of Dyed by Hand, Size 3 needles, and the free pattern from Ravelry will have you knitting every evening this week!
